Dog parks are becoming more common across U.S. cities. Their numbers have grown 4.8% in the last year—and 74% since the Trust for Public land started keeping track in 2009.
Raleigh made the trust’s Top 50 list for access to dog parks—based on the number of parks per 100,000 residents. According to their analysis, “Dog parks are among the fastest-growing amenities in the 100 largest U.S. cities’ park systems.” Former chief economist with Trulia Ralph McLaughlin added, “Dog parks may also play a role in helping sustain relative value in neighborhoods with them compared to those without.”
Why do dog parks raise nearby home values?
Like most price jumps in real estate, the rise of the value of homes near dog parks is driven by demand. When more people want a specific type of home or a specific location, competition for those homes rises and their values do too.
Why dog parks? Well, more people in the U.S. have dogs now than ever before. In 2017, 48.3 million U.S. households reported owning a dog. In 2022, that number is 69 million—an increase of 43%. As Wake County’s population grows by 64 people per day, the demand for space for furry household members grows too. Houses conveniently located to dog parks become more valuable, and home prices in the surrounding areas rise as a result.
As Trulia recently reported, dog parks also raise neighborhood home values by improving an area’s sense of community. Neighbors enjoying clean and well-kept dog parks “make a neighborhood look and feel friendlier.” That’s a big plus for buyers looking for their next home—whether they have dogs of their own or not.
